Currency requirements:
Occasionally we receive records for people with advanced qualifications such as FFT 1’s and Engine Bosses who have not been involved with firefighting for a period of time. When sending records for individuals that are in this circumstance, please provide evidence that they have met the currency standard set forth in PMS 310-1 by having worked on fires within the last 5 years to maintain their credentials. This could be provided through the submission of shift tickets, IAP;s, or other official documentation with the individual listed by name specifically. Previous company records such as a performance evaluation, IQS/IQCS records, previous red cards etc. may qualify.
In keeping up with best practices, for any advancing employees to Firefighter 1 or Engine Boss, we are requiring that in addition to submitting task book Initiation Page, Final Evaluation and Agency Certification page and all of the training incident evaluation pages, we will be needing legible copies of corresponding incident shift tickets, or documentation on form 204’s from the Incident Action Plan’s that correspond to the task book evaluations.
For long assignments, please include the first two shift tickets, one about half way through the assignment, and the final two shift tickets instead of sending all 14+ shift tickets. For assignments of 5 days or less, send all the shift tickets for that assignment.
To further clarify, the Forest Service and the PNWCG currently requires a minimum of 3 separate incidents and 15 operational periods along with a properly completed task book for trainees to become qualified. Please ensure that the evaluations in the task book are filled out completely, including:
Incident Name
Incident Number
Incident location (State and Jurisdiction)
The inclusive dates that the trainee worked on the incident
By completing the evaluations correctly, it helps ensure we have the relevant information to approve the training file. We are careful to ensure that the training files are complete and accurate before we sign them off, and it is much less time consuming to have this done well before we get the files. We understand that sometimes there are unusual circumstances with training files and some take extra time, but those should definitely be the exception!
Another request we would like to make is that you send in completed training files. Please do not send in employee files that are missing items. It is a challenge to track down multiple e-mails and follow up with folks on missing records, so please be patient and collect all of the documentation necessary for your employees before you begin the process of sending them over. Again, we aim for success and it is better for both parties if we can strive to keep things simple and efficient.
A brief clarification on Red Cards:
The Forest Service is requesting, per the contract, that each red card have the following information listed on the card:
Fire position certifications listed and the dates they were achieved.
Total years of experience in fire. For fire fighters working as line EMT’s and Medics, the red card should only display the number of years of line medic/EMT experience the individual has, not the years of experience in medical EMS. If you have been a paramedic for 20 years, but this is your second fire season, your red card will state 1 year of prior experience as a wildland firefighter.
The date the RT-130 was completed.
The Pack Test date and the amount of time it took the employee to complete the pack test.
A picture of the employee.
For Region 6 companies, each red card needs two signatures, one from the company and one from the record inspector.
A color dot that indicates years of experience and level. Yellow dot for First year on fires, Red dot for 1+ years experience and a blue dot for advanced position generally ENGB or higher.
